Desert Landscape With Dry Riverbed & Bridge
A dry riverbed of river rock and decorative rock, crossed by a footbridge and edged in turf.
The Project
A backyard below a tall terraced retaining wall, with a long run of unused ground between the wall and the house. Rather than fill it with lawn, the design uses a dry riverbed as the main feature.
The Challenge
Making a large rock area read as a designed landscape instead of a gravel field, on a lot that steps down from a terraced wall.
A1's Solution
We shaped a winding dry riverbed, laid river rock through the channel with decorative rock on the banks, set a footbridge across it, and ran a turf ribbon along the walkway edge. New plants and boulders were placed along the bed to break up the run.
The Result
A low-water backyard with a real focal point, and almost nothing in it that needs regular irrigation.
